Don't you love new things? Doesn't it take you back to a childhood Christmas of bountiful wonder under the tree? Those are great memories, but sadly they are the beginning of a relentless addiction. I call this addiction "The quest for the ever more shiny things".

Like moths we are attracted to whats bright, shiny, glowing, and the impressive. I think the vast majority of technology isn't disposed of because its outdated but rather because its not shiny anymore.

This is why I always ask people who seek my advice about a new technological purchase the same question "What do you want to DO with it". A vast majority of the time its not much more then they are doing at current, actually mostly they just want to do the same things just better or faster.

At first I always try to get them to upgrade whatever they currently have. This is often much cheaper then replacing whatever unit it is. I tell them to upgrade the software, the memory chip, the hard drive, RAM, get that bigger monitor...or maybe just change the resolution on the current one, Upgrade that wireless plan so you stop going over your minutes or bandwidth, Getting a better internet provider, or any other of the million things a person can do to massively extend the life of their system or device. More often then not this fails, not because its illogical to get the most out of your technology investment but because its not shiny anymore and changing the insides or the various connections is just not as much fun as opening a new box with a modern marvel inside. Even though chances are that new purchase will not improve your situation one bit.

If you don't have the right plan on your cell phone it doesn't matter how awesome your phone is. Buying that newest TV to watch Blueray or whatever else on isn't so wonderful when you get it home and realize your older dvds or gasp! vhs tapes don't look right on it. A new computer is great...but not if you still have to upgrade your internet connection and replace all of your productivity software because your old stuff wont run on the new system. In the end.. well, it all becomes much more expensive then its worth.

It is important to remember that the point of all the Tech companies and stores like Best Buy are to get you to UPGRADE. If they kept all the formats, jacks, and options the same people would never make that big purchase unless their old systems or devices died of old age.

As a general rule of thumb: if you have made no changes to your current technology since purchasing it your wasting your money. See the following examples:

1) When you bought that bigger TV a few years back did your switch to DVD, and phase out VHS? Use the S video or Optical connection for the DVD drive? Did you buy good audio cables or did you did you use the cheap one that came with the player? Did you switch from Stereo to Surround Sound?

2) That cell phone! As long as you have a color screen, a camera, and maybe an expansion slot for a memory card you really don't need to upgrade. Before you go out and buy the 500 dollar smart phone just so you can text, did you ever bother to learn how to use T1? Do you even know what it is? Batteries don't last forever (cell batteries are good for about two years) you know you can replace that battery right? At online stores for half the cost of the same battery at your providers stores..... Keep going over your minutes? Buck up and get the Sixty dollar plan, no one can really get by on that 35 dollar plan ESPECIALLY if your cell is your primary line.

Note on cell phone internet speed: 3G is your friend with it your cooking with gas, without it your better off with a stone tablet to beat your self to death with.

3) Oh the wonder that is your PC! First have you ever opened the case? More Ram? Did you know most PC's can potentionally be made three times faster then they were out of the box  by maxing out the Ram? Bigger/faster hard drive? Is your monitor properly adjusted? O/S up to date? Virus scan? Registry cleaner? Spy bot finder? Do you realize for less then a hundred dollars your computer can be running better then it was when it was new? with no residual costs that tend to come with a new computer?

What residual costs? Well like most of your old software wont run on your new computer (Microsoft office is 250 bucks now and you cant buy Word separately anymore), chances are neither will your printer, and you can bet that new printer is going to need ink. Never mind the hours your not going to get back transferring all your personal files over and probably reformatting them because your formates are outdated.

Note on computer internet speed: Fiber optic  is like a Porsche with a jet engine, Cable is like a regular Corvette with no options, DSL is a rip off since some Cable plans are now cheaper. Otherwise its like a family sedan with a sport package, The follow quote applies to dial-up "Hi, its not 1995 anymore, put the 56k modem down AND SLOWLY BACK AWAY!" seriously kids dial-up is dead if you still have it you may as well be Amish and your computer is most certainly suicidal.

Want Wifi? Get a hub and computer card that says "Wifi B/G compatible" nothing else.

Sure buying a new pc/tv/or phone will fix all your problems in one shot but most likely your going to be right back where you are now sooner instead of later with nothing to show for it but an empty wallet because you still haven't learned how to make your electronics last. So read a book or meet with your local nerd. Upgrade and give your self a year or two to decided what you want/need and be truly prepared for the purchase and its related costs.

iPhone

There are no adverts around for this at the time of going to press (clicking save), but there is a hell of a lot of the old 'word of mouth' marketing going about. Some say they're brilliant and live up to the whispered hype. Others say they're not all they could be, but are still pretty great. I say they're rubbish, and I haven't even mucked about with one yet.

I own an iPod. It is now dead after two years' usage. One day it broke down and, though it had survived a few crashes in the past and only required a quick reformatting, this time it couldn't withstand the pressure and buckles everytime I try to save it's sorry little arse.

So I'm buying a new one, foolishly. I'm buying it today in fact - one of those iPod 'classics' that hold 80 gigabytes of shit. Weirdly, it only costs 160 quid. Compared to the 180 quid I shelled out for my loved one in April for a Nano that has only 8 gigs, it seems to me that Apple's pricing system rips people off left right and centre.

Before I bury myself in a geeky mess of compu-speak, let's have a think about why the iPhone is bound to be shit.

  • According to reports, you have to set up an account with O2 before you can get one. O2 are rip-off bastards.
  • I like having my phone separate to my music. It means that if I get mugged and have left my mp3 player at home then I won't have lost everything of value in one fould swoop. iPhone is all your precious eggs in one basket.
  • Every mugger, for six months at least, will want one. Or a few. They will be your average mugger's holy grail.
  • The touchscreen thing would have been appealing a decade ago, maybe seen on something like Tomorrow's World. In actual fact it'll be incredibly impractical. I have enough problems with my phone calling people of its own free will in the middle of the night and leaving them voicemails which are made up of me shouting at people in pubs, from a distance, over garbled music and the sound of smashing glass.
  • If the iPhone has a cover, disregard last bullet point.
  • They're bloody expensive.
  • Every trendy sod will have one. Actually, even worse, because all the trendy sods probably already have one, the slightly late sods will jump on the bandwagon the moment they go on sale, so they will be absolutely everywhere. Every conversation you hear will be about them - on buses, in pubs, in old people's homes, on the moon, in your coal-shed.
  • Even worse, people will get them out and show them off to other people who have one anyway, and both parties will explode in a paradoxical miasma of pointlessness.
  • Actually, that last one might be a 'pro' rather than a 'con'.
  • Imagine the ringtone nightmare when people can use music from their iTunes library as a ringtone. Or play it at will on the bus. Our ears will burn to music we can't stand.
  • Christ, I hate the world. I hate people.
  • I hate change and I hate the future.
  • I am turning into a bitter old man.
  • I'm 30 in a year. What happened to my youth?
  • Where's me shopping?
  • Who am I?

NB: Some of the features described and slagged off might not actually exist - the author couldn't be arsed to read an iPhone spec before writing.

A Letter to Steve Jobs

Dear Steve:

The word today from the blogosphere is that iPhone firmware update 1.1.1 not only re-locks iPhones unlocked from the AT&T network, but also prevents access to any third-party apps installed on the iPhone, such as installer.app and other community apps installed by installer.app.

For those of us trying to develop legitimate businesses and services for the iPhone and iPod Touch, this action by Apple turns us into casualties of war. While it can be argued that you, as a result of your committments to AT&T, must actively counter the efforts of hackers and developers who have released apps that unlock iPhones from the AT&T network, there is no argument for punishing legitimate developers from producing useful, in-demand services and applications for the iPhone by preventing the installation of third-party applications. If Microsoft prevented the installation of applications on Windows they would be subject to public rage in a matter of seconds and most likely a cadre of lawsuits; why has Apple taken this blanket offensive approach against developers who simply want to let consumers take full advantage of the "revolutionary Internet device" they carry in their hands? If Apple's concern is that such apps might pose danger to the AT&T network, then create a protected mode for iPhone's OS like was done with DOS years ago. Additionally, there should be no reason to prevent third-party apps on the iPod Touch since there is no connection to AT&T's network.

iPhone developers are, indeed, some of your most vocal evangelists. If these tactics continue to impact legitimate development our current enthusiasm will quickly evaporate and cause us to devote our time and money to developing for other mobile platforms (Windows Mobile, Symbian, etc.).

I urge you and Apple to reconsider your tactics against the iPhone unlocking effort and choose a course that doesn't penalize legitimate development.

Sincerely,
Mike Brophy

Let me just say, I love Google! As I caught up on this week's TV premieres, one of the recurring ads I've seen is for the new iPod nano, something about videos. It's a fun TV spot, but what makes it really compelling is the video that they picked to spotlight, with a catchy (read: earworm) song and visually arresting choreography. So of course I had to type in the words, as I remembered them, in Google (with the show on pause on my DVR). "One two three four, tell me what you're looking for." Well, of course I was wrong--the song says "One two three four, tell me that you love me more," but due to the wizardry of the Internet, it still turned up lyrics here, and within another couple clicks I was at the video:

1234 by Feist

And the video is great, with intriguing choreography, including the camerawork, somewhat reminiscent of a Busby Berkeley musical number in a classic movie (Here's an example.). But I couldn't have found it without Google--and once again I'm reminded of the old days when a question like this: "What is that song?" would take forever to unearth, because among one's immediate acquaintance probably no one had heard of Feist...

The funny thing is that this happened to me only a few days earlier with the song on the Old Navy ad...

Ingrid Michaelson's "The Way I Am"

Anyway, I guess this is a good time to say happy 9th anniversary (birthday?) to Google... (which I only knew about from their site)

Wow. Apple has done it again.

A Brand new range of iPods... and they got even better..

I think everyone has come to expect great things from apple as they always get better and better!

No changes in the shuffle, so I'll start off by talking about the new 3rd gen iPod nano.

Two Words: It's great.

I've played around with my friends one and it's definitely much better than the iPod nano 2nd generation. I love the new design, but then again when has apple ever let us down on design. They really did it this time, by adding video playback to the iPod nano (althought i think everyone knew it was coming). Umm... cover flow is beautiful, i wish i could have it on my 80gb 5.5gen iPod. And a whole new range of beautiful colour. Also (this has nothing to do with the iPod) the commercial is awesome!

A few negative points for the new nano; I hate the split screen. It is hideous. They don't even give you an option to siwtch it on and off. I think apple completely ruined the simple and sleek look of the main menu on the iPods. Also another bad point is the memory. If you're going to make the nano play videos, I don't think 8gb is enough memory, i know it wouldn't be enough for me, but i guess the option of video is better than no video playback at all.

On to the new iPod Classic or the 6th gen iPod. I like the new name, it's very classy.

Apple suprised us by revealing the new iPod with a massive 160gb memory! and it's the size of the old 80gb iPod! This is a huuge revalation in portable music. Chances are, in the next few years Apple will have introduced a 1 terrabyte iPod the size of the current 160gb!

The new design. I love it. Much more clean and beautiful than the 5.5gen iPods. . Once again (Although i saw it coming) the cover flow is beautiful on the new iPods *drools*. Oh yeah, I also love what they did with the album art on each song, It looks much more 3d compared to the old albuma art displays.

Negative points for the iPod Classic.. One bad point i can think of is the split screen in the menu... seriously apple you have got to do something about that! Some people that have the iPod Classic gets a little laggy at times.. I didn't notice this on my friend's one but you guys can tell me whether it's true or not. And last but definitely not least I am angry by the fact they took away their white iPod.. It was like apple's mascot.

Finally the iPod touch.. hm.. To be honest i haven't seen one of these in person so what i say could be wrong, but based on what i saw at the WWDC Keynote presentation, It seemed ok. Not brilliant. Just okay, in my opinion. It seemed too much like the iphone with less functions, which i wasn't very pleased with.

However, it has it's good parts, all the technology from the iphone, like sensing whether your holding it upright or on it's side, beautiful coverflow( I know I've said that a thousand times) and the wifi technology.

I really like the youtube function on the new iPod touch, because I would use that alot. I also think that the iTunes WiFi shop is brilliant. I'm not so sure about that Starbucks thing but we'll have to wait and see.

I think the iPod touch's battery life and memory is not very appealing. With the largest memory being 16gb... that's not alot. Another thing i don't like is the fact that the main menu looks kinda empty... that's just my opinion.

To sum up everything, All the new iPods are great, however, apple still has a bit of room to improve.

This has just been my opinion, but I want to hear your opinion, what do you think of the new iPods? leave a comment!
