FROM: Joyce

Help me find a gift for my husband; he is so hard to shop for! 3 facts: a) no clothes, he is XXLT and needs to try on everything first; b) he is into technology–computers and stuff, not software, though. He wants me to get him a hard drive which I don’t think is a good present; c) he likes football, basketball and golf and if I can add, he likes home improvement project. I want to spend no more than $300.

Hi Joyce,
Gift Idea Mom's sweetie is a 6'8 XXLT too! Really! We've been shopping a lot at Casual Male XL and find they have a nice selection of Ralph Lauren, Tommy Bahama and other popular brands.
Does he have an Ipod? This one is a fave of mine: 80G Ipod
If he wants a hard drive, I have to tell you that I own 2 of these 120G Hard Drive and not only find them so useful, they're sort of cool and sexy - yes, sexy - in their little zippered neoprene case with a smooth, shiny black body. Can you tell I'm a computer geek? Its late and I'm tired, but I'll sleep on this one and add a few more suggestions tomorrow.

Till then...

Gift Idea Mom

1. Steve Jobs (Apple);

2. Rupert Murdoch (News Corp);

3. Lloyd Blankfein (Goldman Sachs);

4. Eric Schmidt, Larry Page, Sergei Brin (Google);

5. Warren Buffett (Berkshire Hathaway);

6. Rex Tillerson (Exxon Mobil);

7. Bill Gates (Microsoft);

8. Jeff Immelt (General Electric);

9. Katsuaki Watanabe (Toyota);

10. A.G. Lafley (Procter & Gamble ).

Não, calma. Pequei no título...

200px-powerbook_redjar.jpgMy prior post referred to an object of my desire -- what I referred to as a "towering G5". I had no idea when I mentioned this thing that a tsunami of you guys would leap on me the way a pack of dogs attack a wounded chipmunk, instructing me with great condescension that Mac stopped making those years ago.

Big deal. I work in a giant corporation and my entire floor is packed with G5s, and they rock. I understand that Mac now makes Mac Pros that are packed with Intel power. Here's what they look like. They come in a big tower and I want one. It would go nicely with the Macbook Pro 12" and 17" laptops, the Mac Mini, the iMac and the Apple-TV that are sitting at home waiting for me right now. I say this to quiet the ill-tempered, swaggeringly pompous Macophiles who continually accuse me of not being sufficiently Mac when I occasionally poke a little hole the the slightly wormy side of the AAPL.

Sorry I got the model number wrong, or the processor designation incorrect, or the format of the digital copranshy defibrilated. No matter what you say, my point stands tall: I'm not getting an iPhone until I can use it on the network of my choice! And I DO like every single XBox I've played on! And that doesn't mean I don't want to get a Wii at some point, either. My old Super Nintendo was the best gaming system ever, maybe, except for... now get this... my old Windows PC! Yeah! I liked playing on that, too! It was WAY better than any Mac I've ever played on, okay? Even the G5s at my office!

Thanks for listening. Oh, and you guys who occasionally send me comments wasting your time to tell me what a waste of time reading my blog is? Bring it on! You can waste my time telling me that I'm wasting your time anytime.

Bsams.net seems to think so:

The Newton was marketed as a pda. While the Ipod touch is not. The third party apps have opened up the Ipod touch into much more than a pda. Now, with Apple issuing a development kit to make official third party software for the Ipod touch and Iphone, the barrier between media player and pda is much more grey.

To heck with a phone: if all you want to do is organize your life and listen to music, the Touch is the way to go. And no stylus needed, right?

Well, my Christmas season has been kicked off on a jolly note.  A month ago I managed to lose my iPod while visiting some friends.  I looked everywhere for it with no luck.  Buying a new one would be financially tough and it's really not a good time for that.  Plus, it's just STUPID to lose a new iPod.

While pondering all of this I got an email last week from the parents of the girl who found it.

Let me explain.  When I got the iPod I got the free engraving.  I knew I would want Joshua 1:9 (sorry The Brother), but then there was another line.  Knowing I wouldn't be at the same phone number for long, I put my email address on the back of my iPod.  The girl who found it saw the email address and they wrote to me telling me it was found.  They mailed it back to me and it arrived today.

It works!

I'm very thankful for the kindness of strangers.

I've been listening to music too much and posting too little :) .

The iPod Touch ( I prefer calling it the iTouch) is really good. Some songs come out sounding  better than they do on my speakers on the PC (Ok, not the best available speakers - JBL Creature).

The web browser is really really good. The whole JavaScript thing doesn't work ( which you would expect since it is a full version of Safari, I belive). I mean what on earth were Apple thinking??? How many websites do  you  know of that don't have Javascript???? I use it all the time in developing websites. Even if it's not for visual stuff, java script can be doing a lot of heavy lifting in the background ( take, dare I say it, Facebook Beacon).

Looking at Google Reader in Classic mode is an experience somewhere between being eaten alive and having an out-of-body-experience of the event - can't decide which is worse.  Trying to type and send an email in GoogleMail ( I tried), I found a strong urge to became a Chinese Citizen ( even the Great Firewall of China doesn't stop Javascript) :) . And by the way, I did finish the email and used by PC to find the addresses to send it to.

Though the Mobile mode is much, much better. I think its specially formatted for the iPhone/iTouch.

Viewing websites that don't run on JavaScript or gracefully handled the fact that Javascript was off was pretty good. I think the lack of Javascript was one of the main reasons that Youtube is a separate application on the iTouch.

Don't even get me started on Flash support...

The integration with iTunes direct from the iTouch is a gift from heaven itself, from His Steveness to his faithful Apple flock :)

Change that to an iTouch Comic and it would be perfect.

Youtube works seamlessly as well.

Now, the Syncing experience is something else. If I plug my iPod into my laptop instead of my PC ( keeping in mind I originally used my PC to Sync the iTouch), I get asked if I want to erase my iTouch and sync new music to it. Now my library is exclusively ripped CD's that I've bought myself. Shouldn't iTunes recognize that I already have music from the library ( both my laptop and PC use the same iTunes library out of a shared network location on my server) and shouldn't it allow me to add, change or delete the playlists/music on my iTouch???

Now if there was a way to sync shared  library music (i.e from iTunes running over the server and sharing its library) to my iPod, there wouldn't be this problem ( if there is, please post a comment. Thanks).

Podcast subscriptions work great. Already subscribed to Scott Hanselmann.

Can't complain about anything else. the design is great. the interface is supurb. Take how the screen gently coasts to a stop when you've finished scrolling. The whole flipping thing is really great. I'm getting used to it and its quite responsive when you know what to do.

My mother was using it quite well with out even being told what to do. She still asks me about emails.

Can't wait for the SDK to come out. I'm assuming that the iPhone SDK is also for the iTouch. Can't wait till I can say: "Pimp my iTouch".

Dear Steve:

We hold these truths to be self-evidently pie in the sky, that all bloggers are created equal, that they are endowed by their Computers and iPhones with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are lots and lots of Links, [JavaScript, Flash] and the pursuit of AdSense Dollars

PS added in the bit about Javascript and Flash myself.
