  • I think I’m going to listen to Third Day now..

Last week, my friend Andrew Currie helped installed Linux Mint onto Ryan’s laptop. Ryan’s not the most tech savvy guy, so installing Linux may or may not have been a good idea to begin with, but no matter, Andrew and I were set on giving it a new face, because Ryan had been mentioning that his laptop took forever to load, and its speed gets noticeably slower as each season passes, along with a few other little things that were problematic.

We had to give it a new hard drive, because the old one had issues with it, and any given moment, it could just crash. I honestly can’t tell you the process of installing Linux Mint onto the laptop, perhaps Andrew Currie would care to indulge on this.

Since bringing it home, Ryan’s been fidgeting around with it. His objectives with this laptop were to:

1) Surf the net
2) View documents that he brings home from work such as Powerpoint and Excel
3) Download, play music, and sync it to his iPod, which was given to him as a gift just prior to Christmas

Ok, so with these objectives, the first two were met with no problems. The third, however, proved to be a hell of a task for Ryan. Long story short, Ryan as no longer willing to invest his time any further with what he already spent on trying to figure out how Rhythmbox worked. By Saturday evening, he was so frustrated with it that he declared complete abandonment toward his laptop, and raised war on this poor iPod that barely did anything wrong except not have any music on it. So with that, I decided to make it my mission, since my desktop is still running on Windows OS, this was the perfect opportunity to start getting to know Linux, nothing better than baptism by fire, plus I enjoy a good challenge! So Ryan wants to play music on his laptop and put music on his iPod, I was going to make it happen if it was the last thing I do.

With the help of Andrew, we decided that perhaps there was something wrong with Rhythmbox, and therefore, let’s uninstall it and find another player.

Uninstalling it was easy, click on Software Manager, and type your search, and you can uninstall it a blink of an eye. Here comes the interesting part: I had no idea that within Software Manager, you can search for software that you wanted to install. As a female, the best way to describe it would be to flip through a Sears catalogue and ticking off the items you want, and the best part, all of it was free!

So here we are, music player-less, browsing through the list, first up, Songbird. We picked SB because Andrew has the experience with it and likes it. Installation complete, but how do we sync up this iPod? Find an Add-on, duh! So I did, but for some bizarre reason, still can’t do it, Songbird isn’t recognizing or picking up the iPod…oh well, let’s move on.

I uninstall it, and went back to the catalogue, Banshee was up next. I liked Banshee’s set up, it seemed really user friendly, I would definitely keep if, if I didn’t have this iPod issue I needed to resolve, seriously, why can’t I sync this damn iPod? Like Songbird, Banshee doesn’t want to recognize it either! Sigh, no luck, so we move on again.

At that moment, I contemplated on reinstalling Rhythmbox and finding out how far we can go with it, but wait, Andrew sees that perhaps Amarok would be our saviour! So, full of hope, I install it, boy does it take long to install in comparison to the other players we’ve tried so far, but hey, great big file could mean great big thing right? I start the application up, and omg, it sees my iPod and wants to talk to it! Woohoo! But wait, my attempt to import my music files into the player fails miserably! I would have tried to figure out what was wrong with it, however, the set up and navigating around the program was complicated that I don’t even bother, because if I’m finding it hard to navigate around already, I’d probably be seeing this laptop in pieces if I gave it to Ryan to use.

I do a little further reading, then finally I decide to give Rhythmbox another shot.

Perhaps this was the Tech Goddess taking pity on me, but the second time around, it was so easy! It’s as though whatever beef previously it had with Ryan or myself had completely disappeared.

One of the biggest problems with Rhythmbox is that if it sources the music directly from the music folder you’re asking it to import from, and you decide to relocated the music to a different folder, Rbox becomes discombobulated and doesn’t like that. So I guess the key is to keep your music in a consistent folder and don’t move it. If you must move files around then make sure you update your imported files.

As for the iPod, as soon as i plugged it into the laptop, Rhythmbox found it, but it won’t sync on its own, you have to manually do it, takes a little longer I guess, but not at all complicated.

In this small session working on the Linux OS, I discovered that it is definitely worth your time to learn Linux if you’re the type of person who enjoys a challenge, and have some patience. The option to be able to customize your computer and make it uniquely your own is definitely quite the reward I look forward to. However, if you’re the type who likes to be smacked around, be told exactly what you need, and then be charged an arm and a leg after each bitch slap session, I suppose Windows is definitely the way to go for you ;)

A Dominican friend, Meylinh replied my interview about Dominican Belly Dancing and introduced me Dominican Belly Dancer, Vanessa Angulo

Vanessa Angulo is very famous in the Caribbean. She has a school in Santo Domingo and she teaches also older ladies so they will feel sexy and good with their bodies, she does an amazing job.

Heard the funniest thing yesterday “Your Mum’s so fat she uses an iPad as a iPhone” LMFAO!

We can’t decide if these tables, shaped to look like giant iPods, are utterly brilliant or utterly pretentious.  Is it possible to be both?  Either way, we don’t care.  We’re placing our order for a variety of sizes and colours.  We’re going to have a pink one in our bedroom and treat it like a chez longue.  Because we’re cultured like that.

You can find out more information and the email address of the creavite chappy who designed these by clicking here.

Even though the initial response to Apple’s new creation iPad has been so far very cold, I can bet its going to rock. Simple reason is millions of iPod and iPhone users have always wished to have a bigger screen and ability to play High Definition video. Well, now there is an iPad for that which not only offers a bigger screen with high-resolution but also gives tons of new features that every tech savvy person will love to have.

  • iWork
  • iBooks

iWork will redefine the way people think of creating a spreadsheet, documents and presentation. It’s not something heavily featured but it serves the purposes of millions of users who need something quick yet powerful way of creating documents. I am sure in coming days many will prefer Touch document over Desktop version.

iBook will give sleepless nights to all eBook reader companies and its going to conquer the industry as iPhone did in smartphone market. We have seen just a few publisher but by the time iPad is launched, iPad will be flooded with publishers.

iPad’s ability to connect to camera directly , makes it an amazing tool for photo editing. It will become a must have for photography professionals.

iPhone has limited screen resolution and size but still it offers some spectacular editing apps think when developers have such a big screen with top-notch resolution, what kind of editing app they could offer. Photoshop will definitely come up with a full flagged app for that. Video editing and mixing will evolve again.

iPad will be a blessing for music composers and it will offer music mixing apps.

Complains about not having camera and inability to do multitasking will subside gradually because these arguments have no substance. Critics say you can’t work on iWork while listening to internet radio. But that’s not the fact the fact is yes you can listen to radio while using other apps. I can do that even on my iPhone 3G S. You can listen any web-based radio like FLYCAST even after exiting the app. If you want to browse the internet just install a free browser from App Store. On Safari, listen radio and on other browser , do different thing. Many apps on iPhone work simultaneously and when you have push notification, you actually don’t need to keep all the apps open.

Craving for pseudo multitasking is just a mental block. I send pictures on Ping and if I get a message on Yahoo Messenger, it will notify me immediately and with one tap I will be inside of Yahoo Messenger, and then I get message on Ping, with one tap I will be with Ping.

No need to have clutter on desktop and looking for the different windows that are open actually “Push Notification” is technically advanced technology which does multitasking in better way.

iPad might not do a lot but it has always been the performance, not the feature, that has driven enormous praise and admire towards Apple product.

Some of the features that make iPad an epitome of technical excellence are ability to connect different hardware, high-definition video playback, online book store supported by top of the line publisher, innovative iWork, booming app store and upcoming exclusive apps, fast processor, super fluid user interface. And all these amazing features are complemented by tested and trusted operating system.

iPad is born to conquer.

Apple’s newly-announced the most awaited and long rumored iPad that is believed to be a revolutionary gadget in the digital world, has started to reveal some of its secrets and it doesn’t look like a game changer as Apple CEO Steve Jobs claimed in the press conference.

The iPad was supposed to change the face of digital experience, but this product is little more than a giant iPhone. May be little more only in terms of size because that doesn’t even make calls and size prohibits it to be as handy as iPhone.

USB

The iPad doesn’t has a USB port. It means one cannot hook up printers, scanners and anything else.

A camera connection Kit will be provided which will let user either plug the camera in direct or plug in an SD card to pull off the photos.

Camera

One of biggest shortcoming for a 3G crazy generation is No video camera, no stills camera, and no webcam coming with iPad.

Flash

Who needs Flash, anyway? YouTube and Vimeo have both switched to H.264 for video streaming and the rest of the world of Flash is painful to use.The lack of Flash in the iPad will be knock out punch for  Flash.

GPS

The 3G iPads come with AGPS. Assisted GPS can be one of two things, both of which which offload some work to internet servers and use cell-tower triangulation. The difference is that some AGPS units have real GPS too, and some don’t. We’ll know which the iPad has as soon as we get our hands on one.

Screen Configuration

The iPad screen is a relatively square which is not ideal for watching movies i.e 4: 3. In the era of wide screen & 16:9 aspect ratio, return of 4: 3  pixel configuration is  a surprise as well as disappointment.

But If you really do spend most of your time watching movies on the iPad, maybe you should think about buying, you know, a big TV.

OLED

One of the biggest rumors said that there would be two iPads, one with an OLED screen and one without. It may be more colorful, but it uses more power than an LED backlit screen when all the diodes are lit up. It is dim as compared to LED, making it tough for user to read outdoor.

Multitasking

It appears that in iPad we can’t run applications in the background.  The lack of CPU-cycle-sucking background processes is playing a crucial role in providing ten-hour battery life.

Keyboard

Nobody really thought the iPad would have a physical keyboard. Apple actually has made a keyboard for it is the biggest surprise (apart from the $500 price).

In fact, this little $70 accessory will mean that, despite its simplified nature, the iPad is enough laptop for many people. Why bother with a $400 netbook when you can have this instead?

Verizon

iPhone users hate AT&T, but the only alternative is T-Mobile, whose coverage isn’t as good. Until Verizon switches to the world-standard GSM SIM card, don’t expect to see an Apple product on its network. You can forget all those Verizon iPhone rumors right now.

iPad home screen

OK so it’s what we expected – isn’t it? Maybe that’s the thing missing? Apple has delivered the iPad and it’s exactly what we thought it would be  – a large iPhone. Maybe all the hype surrounding it meant it was always going to fail in some respects. Unlike the iPhone, which filled an already well-established need, there is no existing need the iPad fills.

The success of the product is going to be in the deals that are made with publishers and such like. It feels like the opportunity the publishing industry has been wanting and waiting for. The device does look like a natural digital fit for books and magazines. We’ve been talking to a few clients for some time now as to how to turn their print publications into successful digital publications. With the current size of the iTunes store and the press around launch this maybe the platform that gives each party what they are looking for and give more power and profit back to the publishers themselves.

The locked-down platform strategy will help the success of the product, raising the quality standard of the content and Apps as it has done on the iPhone. This strategy can only benefit the end-user who already knows how to interact with this new technology before it goes on the sale.

The tablet concepts that have been floating the net prior to the launch of the iPad all seem to have a similar solution for the user, which is to have a web ‘esq’ digital interpretation of a magazine layout. Much like the iPad itself, this is what we would expect. However, we’re going to want much more very quickly.

The content and interface should be focused around the device and the user, not existing magazine or website formats. Publishers and designers are going to need to get over this hurdle quickly if they are to help this industry cherish and grow.

The opportunities for such an intuitive device are massive, but it does require lateral thinking, better use of content integration and mix, and a client who is willing to lead the market. The device should throw up some really exciting solutions which I can’t wait to see.

Overall it looks like it’s going to be a very successful product for them and exceed expectations. I guess the bottom line for the consumer is do I want one? I know I do!

Sheer disappointment I say! Are the first thoughts that come to my mind when I think of ipad…

Ipad is a Tablet made by apple Inc. It was unvield 2 days back at an invitation only event. Apple usually fails to disappoint. This time around, they did.

A few observations:
1)It still runs iPhone os even though it is a tablet. IMHO, iPhone os is nice on a 3″ touchscreen. Not on a 9.7″!
2)It is still micromanaged by apple. People have to still go through the app store for any approval. Being a tablet, it should freely allow 3rd party to flow through, not approve of what apps are supposed to come or go. I want to see chrome on the ipad…
3)3 revisions later, apple has still not realized that multitasking is the need of the hour. I want to talk to my friend on facebook while I am typing out a mail!!
4) It runs a good custom made AppleA4 chip of 1GHz.
5) Apple in no way has revolutionized the book world. Alright, you have a good books application, but, nah, not really worth it.
5) $699 for 64gb!? WTH!?(sorry, but that is too costly!!)

Nah. I want iPhone os 4.0 to have multitasking or else apple will fail!
