We took some time out and went to a talk at Tate Britain about Narrative in Videogames. It was pretty interesting, and involved such luminaries as Charles Cecil (of Broken Sword fame), and Dave Gibbons (of Watchmen notoriety!).

One interesting point was about audio, and how that’s so important to a game, and yet seems to be left till last.

I wondered what the makers of Guitar Hero, Rez, Vib Ribbon, Surf Rider et al think of that?

It’s also relevant to what we’re doing here at QS. While the basic shape of one of upcoming games is there, and it’s a classic, it’s the music that really shapes the experience.

It’s not a music game though!

We’ll leave you with that taster for now! More soon!

This app is one my most favorite apps and use on a regular basis, “TuneWiki” made by “TuneWiki Limited” has many features that its hard to believe that its free. With “TuneWiki” you can, read lyrics of songs that you are listening to and read along with the song as captions or turn sideways for fill screen. You can also tell your Facebook friends and Twitter followers what you are listening to. And when you are listening to music just press the thing in the bottom right corner to see YouTube videos of the song you are listening to. I don’t have an iPhone so i’m not sure how good it is but it supposedly tells you what people around you (or in the world are listening to) so if you have an iphone tell me if it is good. but one of the really cool things is that you go to the menu and scroll down and press Autosave Artwork and the app saves the artwork to albums artworks that you don’t have, but it still gets some of them wrong which is annoying but it still dose most of them right. You can also change the skins for the apps, but  the normal one is the best the others are too distracting but thats just what I think. And last one I will talk about is The radio capability, I still hope to find a free app that uses radio stations in your own area but that my not happen, but this is the next best thing you can listen to over 300 radio stations which is pretty cool. so because of the many capabilities of this app I give it a 5 out of 5 stars. Many of these things you may be able to live without, but everything else makes up for that, But tell me what you think. So to get or learn more about this application press here. Imogen Heap on TuneWiki Hope you like it.

Apple Rocks is a video that I made as a parody to the song Tik Tok by Ke$ha. I loved the song, and I love Apple products, so here is the result!

“Monkey Shaker” made by “Workavoidance.com” is one of those weird apps. The point of it is to shake your iPod and see how many shakes you can do in s certain amount of time, and for every shake it makes monkey sounds. You can shake it for 10, 20, 30 and 60 seconds to see how many sakes you can do. What I love about this app is the cheesy picture of the monkey in the background. I give this app a 3 out of 5 stars because it is can cancel when you are in the app because there is a glitch in the game but it is still fine. Please rate or tell me what you think. Press here to get or learn more about this app.

Monkey ShakerI found this app yesterday because I was bored and I just searched up monkey on the app store on the iPod, and it came up on the first 25 apps. My arms are sore from a school ski trip (because of the stupid tow rope) so shaking my iPod hurt, but I still thought it was clever.

During the las redemption in February I recieved my email confirming that my Z-lister shirt has been shipped.
Now I’m eagerly waiting for it =)
Zlist shirt as been sent!

I was a GPS refusenik for quite a while. The problem as I perceived it was rarely knowing where you are, I can get a decent road atlas for a few quid, and years on the bridge of Her Majesty’s ships has instilled strong navigation fu that doesn’t wear off. I finally caved and bought my wife a TomTom One after a trip home from the Lake District where it became obvious that none of this helped much when I was behind the wheel. Since then I’ve gotten kind of lazy, and will normally grab the PND before heading somewhere unfamiliar.

With a family holiday coming up in the States I thought it would be a good idea to get some US maps for the One. At least until I saw the price, and also that there wasn’t enough memory on my device (in fact it seems that only the most expensive devices have the space for you to buy more expensive maps – an odd choice in my mind). So… what would I do?

I’ve dabbled with using a GPS on my netbook, but it doesn’t seem to fix fast enough, it’s hard to position it right, and the (Microsoft) software is a bit clunky. Certainly a cheap option, but probably not something that’s going to work when I’m driver rather than copilot.

I considered buying a PND in that US, but it seemed hard to justify getting something that would only ever have US maps on (I go there a fair bit, but most trips I don’t drive). It also appeared that anything that could handle more maps for back at home was going to be expensive (e.g. as expensive as buying something at home and getting US maps).

TomTom for the iPhone/iPod looked like a nice idea, but it’s not particularly cheap, and the reviews of v1.2 seemed pretty mixed. A sals offer with $10/€10 off the maps, and a free upgrade to the next release was too tempting though, and I was able to find a TomTom car kit for my iPod Touch on eBay for a reasonable discount against the list price (which is frankly insane, given that you can get a TomTom Start for the same dough).

I gave it a road test yesterday, which revealed some good points:

  • The car holder attaches easily, holds firmly and allows you to choose between portrait and landscape orientation
  • It seems to fix quickly
  • It works just like I’d expect a TomTom to work
  • The built in speaker might be a sanity saver for those hire cars without a line in jack or bluetooth

and some bad:

  • It only works when plugged into the USB charger
  • It forgets routes if you have to exit the app to change the music that’s playing
  • Pausing any music that you have playing for turn by turn instructions gets annoying really quickly
  • No downloadable voices (we’ve got to quite like having Homer Simpson on the One)
  • The adaptor will probably take nearly the same space in a travel bag as a separate PND would
  • The ‘advanced lane guidance’ isn’t all that good, for example coming off the M3 to the M25 it showed that we could use either of the exit lanes when in fact we needed to be in the right one if we didn’t want to find ourselves heading the wrong way.
  • The ‘advanced lane guidance’ also doesn’t seem to respect the choice of day/night colours
  • ‘Advanced lane guidance’ as you leave a motorway can leave you with little time to figure out which lane you’re supposed to be at the top of the slip road
  • I’ve never used TomTom’s traffic or ‘Live’ services, so I don’t miss them, but I suspect this may be a huge omission (especially on an iPhone or MiFi’d iPod)
  • Position tracking on roundabouts seems a little behind the curve (e.g. not as good as I recall from my One)

That seems like a lot of bad versus good, which probably distorts the overall picture. It’s not THAT bad, there’s just plenty of room for improvement. Fingers crossed for v1.3 and that free upgrade. I’ll post again following the upgrade or if I have a significantly different experience with the US maps.

We all want the next great idea – the Frisbee, the Hula Hoop, the iPod, GPS or Tootsie Roll.  In working with people I often ask them to list 20 ideas for things they could imagine and would enjoy doing.  And then I watch them struggle as they filter each idea – often with a quick “Yes but” that destroys even the consideration of a possibility.

What if I asked you for a list of 20 things you would hate doing?  As soon as you have some life experience, knowing what you don’t want is often the most helpful tool in the process of clarification.

Maybe creating a list of 20 things that wouldn’t work is the best tool for finding the next great idea.  If you’re making adhesives, you don’t want a product that doesn’t stick permanently – but then you discover Post-It-Notes.  You wouldn’t want a magnetron that melted a candy bar when you got too close – but then you discover the micro-wave oven.  The last thing you want in your sterile labrotory is mold – oh wait, that’s penicillin.

Your mistakes, failures and bad ideas may be the very ingredients you need to uncover your greatest idea ever.  Could you learn how to generate more bad ideas?  It seems the good ones just magically slip though.  Don’t miss the opportunities brought to light by your mistakes.

Many experienced gamers will deride me for this statement, but I played my very first adventure game

I joined Lockerz.com on 21st October 2009 and have been checking it daily, answering the questions and recently watching all the video they have online.

As from today i have 31 friends invited and 1046Ptz locked up in my locker.
